Worked example 1

This is my dad. ___ is tall.

Remember: Read the first sentence. Is it about a man or boy, a woman or girl, a thing, or more than one?

Common mistakes

  • Used they for only one person or thing.
  • Used it for a person. It is for a thing; people are he, she or they.
  • Mixed up he and she. Spoken Cantonese uses one word for both, but English does not: he is for a man or boy, she is for a woman or girl.
