Worked example 1

Speech Day news The girl ___ won the speech contest is in my class.

Remember: Look both ways. Is the word before a person, a thing or a place? What comes straight after the blank?

Common mistakes

  • Used where without a place and a complete clause after it.
  • A noun comes straight after the blank, so only whose fits: it shows that the noun belongs to the person or thing before.
  • The clause after the blank is already complete, so it needs where, not who or which.
