Organise raw data into classes and find the frequency of a class

Follow this one with me, a step at a time. Try to guess each step first.
Worked example 1

The test marks of 16 students are: 52, 49, 88, 77, 84, 42, 79, 50, 71, 51, 85, 59, 62, 84, 60, 44. The marks are organised into the classes 40–49, 50–59, 60–69, 70–79, 80–89. Find the frequency of the class 50–59.

Remember: The class 50–59 starts at 50 and stops at 59. Both of those marks are in it, and 60 is not.

Common mistakes

  • Counted a value that belongs to the next class. Classes do not overlap, so a class stops at its upper limit.
  • Left out a value equal to the lower limit, and that value belongs to this class.
  • Left out the values on both limits. Both limits belong to the class.
