Calculate the mean, median and mode of ungrouped data

Follow this one with me, a step at a time. Try to guess each step first.
Worked example 1

Find the mean of the following data: 3, 16, 3, 14, 10, 18, 3, 15, 17

Remember: Add up all the data, then divide by how many data there are.

Common mistakes

  • Gave the mode, the value that occurs most often.
  • Gave the median, the middle value when the data are in order.
  • Sorted the data and stopped one place from the middle.
