Find the sum to a finite number of terms of an arithmetic sequence

Follow this one with me, a step at a time. Try to guess each step first.
Worked example 1

The first term of an arithmetic sequence is 12 and the common difference is 9. Find the sum of the first 24 terms.

Remember: With first term a, common difference d and n terms, the sum is n[2a + (n − 1)d] ÷ 2.

Common mistakes

  • Found the last term and stopped. The question asks for the sum.
  • Summed one term too few.
  • Added the first term n times and left out the common difference.
