Use combinations to solve problems related to probability

Follow this one with me, a step at a time. Try to guess each step first.
Worked example 1

A class has 4 girls and 5 boys. 3 students are chosen at random to form a team. Find the probability that all the students chosen are girls.

Remember: The order of drawing does not matter. Count the ways of choosing from the wanted group, and divide by the ways of choosing from everything.

Common mistakes

  • Treated the draws as if each item were put back. Without replacement, the numbers change after each draw.
  • Used a permutation on top and a combination below. Top and bottom must count in the same way.
  • Found the probability for one draw only.
